The inventor of the footbed.
The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed is the core of all the brand’s footwear. Today, the term “footbed” has become synonymous with extraordinary comfort. BIRKENSTOCK first used the term “footbed” in the 1930s to describe an insole with special support elements, designed to fit the anatomical shape of the foot.
The legendary design with a deep heel cup.
The core of all Birkenstock footwear is the original Birkenstock footbed. This meticulously crafted design makes the wearer feel as though they are standing on a sandy beach, providing long-lasting comfort for the feet and supporting overall health, enhancing both physical and mental well-being. The deep sculpted design in the heel area effectively supports the foot’s structure, securely holding the heel bone in its natural position. This design ensures that the feet receive almost the same level of support as they would in closed shoes, even when wearing sandals.
Heel mold and internal and external arch support.
The heel mold design activates the calf muscles, stabilizes the rear of the foot, and improves gait and coordination. The internal and external arch support wraps around the navicular bone on both sides of the footbed, providing the necessary stability for the foot during walking.
The transverse arch support and toe grip design.
The transverse arch support runs through the middle of the footbed, stabilizing the metatarsals and ensuring the foot maintains a natural, upright, and stable posture. The toe grip design features raised indentations near the front of the footbed, close to the toes, which help keep the toes relaxed and naturally spread apart, supporting their natural rolling motion.
The edge of the footbed.
The footbed is particularly raised at the front, and the elevated edge of the footbed effectively protects the toes during foot movement.
Footbed structure
(1) First Layer – Jute: This forms the foundation of the footbed, stabilizing the natural cork and latex core.
(2) Cork and Latex Sole: The cork and latex sole is the core of all Birkenstock shoes. The shock-absorbing and highly flexible cork and latex core supports the feet and relieves pressure. The natural materials provide insulation against heat and cold, creating a favorable foot climate.
(3) Second Layer – Jute: The second layer of jute is placed on both sides of the footbed. This increases the footbed’s flexibility and durability. The thick, moisture-absorbing jute helps regulate humidity.
(4) Suede Lining: The suede lining absorbs moisture. This natural characteristic of the high-quality top layer helps maintain a comfortable foot climate.
(5) Foam Inserts: The molded soft footbed retains the same properties as the original footbed. Additional foam inserts in the soft insole provide extra comfort.
The first pair of Birkenstock slippers
The first Birkenstock slipper was called the Madrid. Almost 50 years ago, this single-strap, covered sandal was first introduced. Its simple lines and strong hippie style have gone through the changes of times and the evolution of trends, and now it has become a classic and iconic item. The unique anatomical sole is made of high-quality natural materials and fits the contours of the foot perfectly, providing the necessary support when walking. Not only that, this shoe can also easily show the perfect combination of practicality and fashion sense.
